In a year of unparalleled achievements, Manchester City star Rodri clinched the prestigious Ballon d'Or, but his triumph was met with criticism from none other than five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese legend, while attending the Dubai Globe Soccer Awards, expressed his belief that Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr deserved the honor instead. Ronaldo stated, “Vinicius Jr should have won the Ballon d’Or, in my opinion, it was clear. It was unfair. This is why I love Globe Soccer Awards, they are honest.”

Rodri responded to Ronaldo’s remarks in an interview with AS, expressing his surprise: "Well, it was a surprise, really, because he knows better than anyone how this award works and, above all, how the winner is chosen." Rodri highlighted that journalists voted for the winner, and these same journalists had previously recognized Ronaldo’s own achievements.

Rodri’s accolades in 2024 include being instrumental in Manchester City’s historic quadruple and leading Spain to Euro 2024 glory. He became the first Premier League player to win the Ballon d'Or since Ronaldo in 2008. Despite the controversy, Rodri’s performances and consistency over the past 18 months speak for themselves.

Real Madrid further fueled the debate by withdrawing their delegation from the Ballon d'Or ceremony, showing their dissatisfaction with the result.

As discussions continue, Rodri’s Ballon d'Or win symbolizes a shift in football’s power dynamics. The question remains: Was it the right decision, or did Vinicius Jr deserve the crown?
